A 4-year-old’s smoothie recipe

When Connor came home from school the other day, he was set on having a smoothie. We had very little yogurt, no ice, no fresh fruit. But he was determined. I decided to follow his lead and see what happens.

He knew there were cranberries in the freezer, and he’d been intent on finding a use for them for a couple of days. He grabbed the two small containers of Greek yogurt in the fridge — black cherry and strawberry. He said we needed sugar, and later said there should be brown sugar too.

I added some milk because the yogurt was so thick. After tasting it, Connor decided it needed even more milk and just a little more sugar.


He tried to drink it through a Magic Milk Straw but it was too thick to pass through the chocolate powder. So then he wanted to put chocolate syrup in the smoothie. I wouldn’t let him so he decided to drink a cup of chocolate milk side-by-side with his smoothie.

He didn’t end up drinking a whole lot of the smoothie, but he sure had fun helping create it.

    What a creative kid! Kieran hasn’t made his own recipes yet, but I’ll be interested to see what he does when he figures out he has that option ;)

    I give you so much credit for letting him be creative. I think that is something I didn’t do enough of.

      It wasn’t bad. Would have been better without brown sugar!

    Such creativity! I’ve had a cranberry based smoothie at Jamba and it is tart, but really delicious!

    I’ve never got round to making smoothies with Imogen, it’s a bit cold now it’s nearing winter so I may have missed my moment for this year, but I’m sure she’d enjoy having a go when the weather warms up. I’m really impressed that he figured out his own recipe! Hats off to you for giving him (almost) free reign there, I tend to jump in too much.

    I love how you encourage your son in his culinary efforts. My 2 1/2 year old is just starting to make her own creations but has a long way to go until she is giving your little chef a run for the money! Cute pictures too!

    Really cute that he put so much work into it, even if he didn’t love it as much as the chocolate syrup.

    but I don’t blame him (wink)
